The Story
Plant Bio
Staphylea trifolia is an upright, suckering, deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America, known for its drooping clusters of bell-shaped white flowers. It produces unique, inflated, bladder-like seed capsules in late summer. The most distinctive feature is its papery, three-lobed, bladder-like seed pods which persist into fall and contain hard, shiny seeds that rattle when shaken.

Planting
How to Grow
- Choose a location with partial to full shade and moist soil.
- Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball.
- Place the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil.
- Backfill with amended soil, gently firming it around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.
- Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pro Tip
Control its suckering habit by pruning unwanted shoots at the base to maintain a tidy form in smaller gardens.
