Market Intelligence

The Sow Plant Price Index

Every night we check real prices across every nursery in our marketplace. A falling line means comparable prices are getting cheaper; the sale rate shows how widespread discounts are.

Discounting is near its recent norm
102.1latest weekly index · watch the direction

11% of comparable plants are discounted this week

The index uses weekly medians for the same plant, retailer, and product size, then combines matched price changes without letting new or disappearing listings move the line. Rebuilt nightly from live listings.

74 plants

Showing 60 of 74 verified drops. The Sow app tracks every one of them and tells you when something in your own garden plan goes on sale.

Is that actually a good price?

A percentage off only tells you half of it. The price sheets show what every variety in a genus is going for right now, so you can see whether today's drop is a genuine bargain or just an ordinary price with a label on it.

How we work this out

Every day we check what the mail-order nurseries we track are asking for each plant — the price, the size, and whether it is in stock — and we keep the history. A plant lands on this page when today's lowest price beats its own lowest price from 30 days ago. We never use a retailer's “compare at” figure, because that number is marketing, not history. The index above is a fixed basket, so it moves when prices move rather than when stock mix changes.

About these prices

How do you know a plant is actually on sale?

We check what the nurseries we track are asking for each plant, every day, and keep the history. A plant appears here when today's lowest price across those nurseries is below its own lowest price 30 days ago. We compare a plant against its own recent history — not against a 'was' price a retailer typed in — so a permanently inflated list price cannot manufacture a fake discount.

How are the price drops ordered?

We compare each plant's current lowest price with its own recent history, then surface the strongest verified drops. Plant pages show the lowest current nursery price we have recorded.

What is the Sow Plant Price Index?

A fixed-basket index of plant retail prices, rebuilt nightly from our own price history. 100 means every plant in the basket is sitting at its own typical price. Because the basket is fixed, the index moves when prices move — not because the mix of what is in stock changed. We read it alongside the share of plants currently discounted, which is the more actionable number.

How often does this page update?

Prices are re-checked daily and this page rebuilds hourly. The date on each drop shows when it was last verified.
