The Story
Plant Bio
An iris relative, this short-lived perennial forms a clump of sword-like, gray-green leaves. In summer, branched stems rise bearing a profusion of small, iris-like, lavender flowers that open for only one day. Flowers open in the afternoon and last for only a day, but are produced in abundance. The plant is known as Vesper Iris because the flowers open in the evening (vespers). After flowering, seed pods split open to reveal blackberry-like seeds.

Common Questions
Vesper Iris questions
What zones can Vesper Iris grow in?
Vesper Iris is hardy in USDA Zones 4–10. Inside that range it survives winter in the ground; outside it, grow it as an annual or a container plant you protect.
Is Vesper Iris deer resistant?
Yes — Vesper Iris is rated deer-resistant. Deer typically pass it over, though extreme hunger can override any plant's defenses.
When does Vesper Iris bloom?
Vesper Iris typically blooms in mid-summer through late summer. Exact timing shifts a week or two with your zone — Sow's bloom calendar maps it to your garden.
Does Vesper Iris need full sun?
Vesper Iris does best in full sun to part shade. In hot climates, afternoon shade keeps blooms fresher longer.
Is Vesper Iris drought tolerant?
Yes — once established (usually after the first full season), Vesper Iris handles dry spells with minimal watering. Water deeply its first year to build the root system that makes that possible.
