Pentas

Pentas lanceolata

The Story

Plant Bio

Pentas lanceolata, the Egyptian star cluster, is a dense tender perennial from eastern Africa and the Arabian peninsula, grown as a summer annual over most of the country. Softly hairy evergreen leaves two to four inches long cover upright stems one to two feet high, topped by domed clusters of small five-pointed tubular flowers in red, pink, magenta, lilac or white.

It is among the best butterfly plants available for a hot summer: the tubular flowers hold nectar that swallowtails and hummingbirds can reach, and it flowers without pause from late spring until frost in heat that stops most bedding. It is a true perennial in zone 10 and above, and can be overwintered as a houseplant elsewhere.

Planting

How to Grow

  1. Plant out after the last frost in full sun.
  2. Give it free-draining soil or compost.
  3. Water regularly but never leave it waterlogged.
  4. Feed containers every few weeks through summer.
  5. Pinch young plants once to encourage branching.
  6. Bring plants indoors before frost to overwinter.

Pro Tip

Pinch the growing tips once when young — an unpinched plant makes one tall stem and a fraction of the flower clusters.

Common Questions

Pentas questions

What zones can Pentas grow in?

Pentas is hardy in USDA Zone 10. Inside that range it survives winter in the ground; outside it, grow it as an annual or a container plant you protect.

Is Pentas deer resistant?

Yes — Pentas is rated deer-resistant. Deer typically pass it over, though extreme hunger can override any plant's defenses.

When does Pentas bloom?

Pentas typically blooms in late spring to frost through late summer. Exact timing shifts a week or two with your zone — Sow's bloom calendar maps it to your garden.

Does Pentas need full sun?

Pentas does best in full sun to part shade. In hot climates, afternoon shade keeps blooms fresher longer.

Is Pentas drought tolerant?

Yes — once established (usually after the first full season), Pentas handles dry spells with minimal watering. Water deeply its first year to build the root system that makes that possible.
