The Story

Plant Bio

Sabal uresana is a slow-growing, single-trunked fan palm. Its large, stiff, costapalmate leaves are a beautiful silvery blue-green (glaucous), though some specimens may be green. It produces long, arching inflorescences of small, creamy-white flowers. Highly sought after for its striking blue-green foliage, Sabal uresana is also one of the most cold-hardy blue palms. It is exceptionally drought and heat tolerant once established, making it a superb choice for xeric, subtropical, and Mediterranean-style landscapes.

Common Questions

Sonoran Palmetto questions

What zones can Sonoran Palmetto grow in?

Sonoran Palmetto is hardy in USDA Zones 8–10. Inside that range it survives winter in the ground; outside it, grow it as an annual or a container plant you protect.

Is Sonoran Palmetto deer resistant?

Yes β€” Sonoran Palmetto is rated deer-resistant. Deer typically pass it over, though extreme hunger can override any plant's defenses.

When does Sonoran Palmetto bloom?

Sonoran Palmetto typically blooms in summer through late fall. Exact timing shifts a week or two with your zone β€” Sow's bloom calendar maps it to your garden.

Does Sonoran Palmetto need full sun?

Sonoran Palmetto does best in full sun to part shade. In hot climates, afternoon shade keeps blooms fresher longer.

Is Sonoran Palmetto drought tolerant?

Yes β€” once established (usually after the first full season), Sonoran Palmetto handles dry spells with minimal watering. Water deeply its first year to build the root system that makes that possible.
