Hoya Wax Plant

Hoya carnosa

The Story

Plant Bio

Hoya carnosa, wax plant, is an epiphytic climbing vine from Southeast Asia, Japan and Taiwan, trailing or twining several feet. Thick leathery leaves with a waxy surface line the wiry stems, and rounded clusters of small star-shaped flowers in white and pink open in summer, each with a darker central crown and a strong evening scent.

Never cut off the stubby leafless stalks the flowers grow from — those are the spurs, and the plant reblooms from the same ones year after year, so removing them costs you future flowers. It also flowers best slightly pot-bound and a little neglected, which means the usual instincts to repot and feed generously both work against it.

Uses & Benefits:

Ornamental UsesWaxy star-shaped flower clusters with an evening scent, over thick leathery evergreen foliage.
Practical UsesExtremely long-lived and thrives on neglect, flowering better when left pot-bound.
Ecological BenefitsGrown almost entirely indoors, so its value is as a houseplant rather than in the garden.

How to Grow

  1. Give it bright indirect light, with a little direct sun.
  2. Use a very free-draining, bark-based compost.
  3. Let it dry out substantially between waterings.
  4. Leave it pot-bound; repot only every few years.
  5. Never remove the old flower spurs.
  6. Support the stems on a hoop or let them trail.

Pro Tip

The stubby stalks left after flowering are the spurs it reblooms from — cutting them off is the commonest reason a hoya never flowers again.
