Ensete ventricosum, the Abyssinian banana, is a giant herbaceous perennial from eastern Africa, reaching twelve to twenty feet high and six to ten across. It builds a thick pseudostem from overlapping leaf bases, topped by huge paddle-shaped leaves, often with a red midrib, that can be several feet long. It flowers once and then dies.
It is monocarpic: an individual plant flowers once, sets fruit and dies, though that usually takes several years and rarely happens outside the tropics. It also demands genuine shelter, since the enormous leaves shred in wind, and is high-maintenance by any standard, needing heavy feeding, constant water and lifting before frost.
