How to grow Photinia

Whats common across all Photinia varieties in our catalog — drawn from the care records of the 3 most-grown of them.

The Photinia year

  • PruneApril–June100% of varieties

Tip-prune with secateurs to encourage dense branching and continuous flushes of red growth.

  • FertilizeMarch67% of varieties

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser sparingly if soils are poor.

  • Check for PestsApril67% of varieties

Inspect foliage for fungal leaf spot, especially during cool, wet weather.

Do

  • Prune selectively with secateurs just above a leaf joint to encourage dense branching and fresh red growth.
  • Ensure excellent drainage, especially in heavy soils, to prevent root rot.
  • Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system.
  • Space plants for airflow 🌬️
  • Water at the base only 💧

Avoid

  • Do not prune heavily in autumn, as this triggers soft new growth that is highly vulnerable to frost damage.
  • Do not use overhead irrigation, which leaves foliage wet and increases susceptibility to fungal leaf spot.
  • Do not over-fertilise, as excess nutrients promote succulent growth prone to pests and disease.
  • Plant a tight unbroken hedge ❌

What goes wrong with Photinia

ProblemWhat you'll seeWhat to do
AphidsClusters of small insects on soft new red growth, causing distorted or curled leaves.Knock off with a sharp spray of water or apply horticultural soap if infestations are heavy.
Scale insectsBrown limpet-like bumps on stems with sooty mould on the leaves belowTreat with horticultural oil in late winter before growth resumes
Fungal leaf spotTiny dark red to purple spots on leaves that enlarge, leading to yellowing and premature leaf drop, typically during cool, wet weather.Improve air circulation, avoid overhead watering, clear away fallen infected leaves, and apply a registered copper-based or systemic fungicide if severe.
Entomosporium leaf spotRed-purple spots that spread and merge, causing heavy leaf drop and eventual death of the plantSpace widely, water at the base, remove fallen leaves and prune out affected growth. Badly infected hedges rarely recover; replace with a different species
