Licuala ramsayi, commonly known as the Australian fan palm, is a solitary, slow-growing tree palm native to the wet tropical rainforests of northeastern Queensland. It develops a slender, unbranched trunk marked by closely spaced leaf scars, topped by a dense canopy of large, pleated, near-circular fronds.
The massive leaf blades can reach up to two metres in diameter and are deeply divided into distinctive wedge-shaped segments. Long petioles support these fans and are heavily armed with sharp marginal spines along their lower edges.
