The Story
Plant Bio
Ptilotus extenuatus, the slender mulla mulla, is an erect perennial herb native to eastern Australia that develops a woody rootstock and stems up to 12 inches high. Over the growing season, these stems become decumbent, lying close to the ground, with the initial woolly-hairy coating on the stems and foliage shedding to leave them smooth.
This rare species is distinguished by its narrow, interrupted flower spikes up to five inches long, which contain roughly 20 crowded flowers with dry, papery bracts. The small, linear to lance-shaped leaves are spaced widely along the stems, with new growth displaying a distinct woolly texture.

Planting
How to Grow
- Select a planting site with excellent drainage and full sun exposure.
- Prepare the soil to ensure it is loose and free-draining, avoiding heavy clay.
- Water sparingly during establishment, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.
- Avoid applying high-phosphorus fertilizers, opting for low-rate native formulations if necessary.
Pro Tip
Avoid pruning into the old, woody rootstock; cutting back into bare wood will cause permanent dieback of the stems.
