The Story
Plant Bio
Cyathea cooperi, commonly known as the scaly tree fern, is a fast-growing arborescent fern native to the wet sclerophyll forests and rainforest margins of eastern Australia. It develops a slender, single trunk topped by a broad canopy of arching, finely divided fronds that can reach up to five metres in length.
This species is distinguished by the prominent oval scars left on the trunk by fallen fronds and the thick dressing of pale, papery scales at the base of the leaf stalks. Unlike the slower-growing Dicksonia antarctica, it tolerates warmer conditions and higher humidity but remains highly sensitive to dry winds and direct midday sun.

Planting
How to Grow
- Select a position in part to full shade that is protected from strong, drying winds.
- Incorporate generous amounts of well-rotted organic matter into a moist, well-drained soil.
- Plant the root ball at the same depth as it was in the container, securing the trunk if necessary until established.
- Water regularly and apply a thick layer of organic mulch around the base to retain soil moisture.
Pro Tip
Water the entire length of the fibrous trunk rather than just the soil at the base, as tree ferns absorb a significant portion of their moisture and ambient humidity through the trunk surface.

Care Guide
Do
- Water the trunk daily during hot, dry summer periods to maintain high ambient humidity.
- Apply a light application of organic fertiliser or well-rotted compost to the root zone in spring.
- Remove dead, completely brown fronds by cutting them close to the trunk.
Don't
- Never prune green or semi-green fronds, as this starves the plant of energy and stunts trunk growth.
- Do not allow the soil to dry out completely, which causes rapid frond desiccation.
- Never water or fertilise directly into the growing crown, which can encourage rot.
