Plant Bio
Consolida ajacis, the rocket or giant larkspur, is a cool-season annual from the Mediterranean growing two to four feet high on a narrow upright frame. Finely dissected, almost feathery leaves sit below tall spires of spurred flowers in blue, pink or white, open from June to August. It self-seeds readily where it is happy.
The whole plant is seriously toxic, the seed most of all, containing the same class of alkaloids that make larkspur a major cause of cattle poisoning. It is beautiful and worth growing, but keep the seed heads away from children and animals, and wear gloves when you clear the plants at the end of the season.
