Itea virginica, Virginia sweetspire, is an arching deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub native to the southeastern United States, reaching four to eight feet. Long drooping racemes of tiny fragrant white flowers cover the plant in late spring, and the foliage turns deep red and purple in autumn, holding late into the season.

It is one of very few shrubs that will grow in standing water yet also tolerates drought once established, which makes it unusually useful for rain gardens where conditions swing. The autumn colour arrives late and persists for weeks, often still showing when everything else is bare.
