Scabiosa atropurpurea, pincushion flower, is an upright annual native to southern Europe, western Asia and northern Africa, reaching two to three feet. A low cushion of lobed basal leaves sends up slender stems topped with domed wheel-shaped flower heads in deep maroon, pink, lavender or white, each studded with protruding stamens that give the pincushion effect.
It flowers from late spring to frost and cuts exceptionally well, with a long vase life and stems that keep producing the more you pick. The dark maroon forms are near-black in some light, which is why it has stayed in cutting gardens for centuries under the older name sweet scabious.
