Kolkwitzia amabilis, beautybush, is a dense arching deciduous shrub from central and east-central China, six to ten feet high and six to eight feet across. Vase-shaped growth carries light grey to brown bark that splits and exfoliates on old stems, and small bell-shaped pink flowers smother the branches in late spring.
For two weeks in late spring the arching branches disappear under pink bell flowers, and the bristly brown seed capsules that follow persist into winter alongside peeling bark on the old stems. It flowers on the previous year's wood, so the arching habit and the display depend on renewal pruning rather than shearing.
