The Story

Philadelphus x lemoinei is an arching mounding deciduous shrub of hybrid origin, six to ten feet high and five to eight feet across. Narrowly oval leaves up to two inches long are smooth green above and hairy beneath, and cup-shaped white flowers one to three inches across smother the arching stems in early summer.

The scent is the point — a sweet orange-blossom fragrance that carries across a garden for the two or three weeks it flowers, which is why the whole genus is called mock orange. Lemoine's hybrids brought that scent onto a more compact, more freely flowering frame than the species. It flowers on last year's wood, so pruning timing decides the display.
