The Story

Plant Bio

Helleborus croaticus is a small clumping evergreen perennial endemic to Croatia, six to twelve inches high and about as wide. Dark green leaves divided into deeply lobed, often toothed lanceolate segments clothe branched stems, and cup-shaped flowers with coloured sepals rather than petals open in late winter and early spring.

What look like petals are sepals, which is why the flowers hold their colour for weeks rather than days and why they persist as the seed swells. It is one of the smallest hellebores, so it suits the front of a shaded bed where the larger hybrids would swamp it, and NCSU rates it resistant to both deer and rabbits.
