The Story
Plant Bio
Asparagus densiflorus, Sprenger's asparagus fern, is an evergreen perennial from temperate southern Africa, making arching stems two to three feet long and spreading three to four feet. It is not a fern: the feathery green needles are flattened stems, and small fragrant white flowers are followed by showy red berries. The stems carry small thorns.
Birds take the red berries and spread the seed, and the species has become invasive in Florida, Hawaii and parts of California, where it displaces native undergrowth. Grow it in a container rather than in open ground in those regions, and strip the berries before they ripen; a true fern is the better choice for open planting there.

Planting
How to Grow
- Plant in spring in organically rich, free-draining soil.
- Site in part shade or bright indirect light indoors.
- Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.
- Grow it in a container where it is invasive.
- Strip berries before they ripen to prevent spread.
- Cut old stems out at the base to renew the plant.
Pro Tip
The tuberous roots store water, so it recovers from a missed watering far better than a real fern would; do not compensate by overwatering.
