The Story

Plant Bio

Potentilla fruticosa, or shrubby cinquefoil, is a dense, many-branched deciduous shrub found across the northern hemisphere, including much of North America. It mounds two to four feet high and rather wider, on branches clad in small compound leaves of medium to blue-green. Saucer-shaped yellow flowers about an inch and a half across open from June to September.

Few small shrubs flower for as long, and it does it on poor, dry, clay or windswept ground that defeats most border plants. The one climate it dislikes is a hot, humid summer, where flowering is thinner and the plant is less vigorous; in the south, site it where afternoon shade takes the edge off.
