The Story

Spiraea x vanhouttei, bridal wreath spirea, is a broad arching deciduous shrub of hybrid origin, five to eight feet high and seven to twelve across. Slender stems form at the base and sweep gracefully to the ground, and in late spring the whole framework is lined with dense clusters of small white flowers, hiding the foliage entirely.

The arching fountain shape is the entire point of the plant, and shearing it into a ball destroys both the form and most of the flower — it is the commonest thing done wrong to this shrub. Prune within a few weeks of flowering by taking whole old stems out at the base, which keeps the fountain intact and the plant flowering from young wood.
