Glossy Abelia

Abelia x grandiflora

The Story

Plant Bio

Abelia x grandiflora, glossy abelia, is a dense arching semi-evergreen shrub raised from two Chinese species, reaching six to eight feet with a rather greater spread. Small glossy dark green leaves take on bronze and purple tones in cold weather, and clusters of small bell-shaped white to pale pink flowers open from late spring right through to frost.

Nearly everything sold now is a compact or variegated cultivar at two to four feet rather than the six- to eight-foot hybrid, so buy by cultivar name and check the mature size rather than assuming. The rosy sepals stay on the plant after the petals drop, which keeps a warm haze of colour on the shrub for weeks after each flush of flower.

Uses & Benefits:

Ornamental UsesMonths of small bell-shaped flowers, followed by rosy persistent sepals and bronze winter foliage.
Practical UsesTough, adaptable and largely trouble-free, and dense enough to work as an informal screen.
Ecological BenefitsBees, butterflies and hummingbirds all work the flowers, over an unusually long season.

Pro Tip

It flowers on new wood, so late-winter pruning costs you nothing — the opposite of most spring-flowering shrubs.

Common Questions

Glossy Abelia questions

What zones can Glossy Abelia grow in?

Glossy Abelia is hardy in USDA Zones 6–9. Inside that range it survives winter in the ground; outside it, grow it as an annual or a container plant you protect.

Is Glossy Abelia deer resistant?

Yes — Glossy Abelia is rated deer-resistant. Deer typically pass it over, though extreme hunger can override any plant's defenses.

When does Glossy Abelia bloom?

Glossy Abelia typically blooms in late spring to frost through early fall. Exact timing shifts a week or two with your zone — Sow's bloom calendar maps it to your garden.

Does Glossy Abelia need full sun?

Glossy Abelia does best in full sun to part shade. In hot climates, afternoon shade keeps blooms fresher longer.

Is Glossy Abelia drought tolerant?

Yes — once established (usually after the first full season), Glossy Abelia handles dry spells with minimal watering. Water deeply its first year to build the root system that makes that possible.
