What you do

Remove at least 500 sq ft of Bermuda grass and replace with xeriscape with 30% living plant canopy.

Requirements

  • Minimum 500 sq ft (or all grass if under 500)
  • 30% canopy of living desert-adapted plants (mature size counts)
  • Plants on ADWR Phoenix AMA list
  • No plastic sheeting; no fountains or pools in area
  • Work must begin and finish July 1 2026 to June 1 2027
  • W-9 if $600+ in a year

How to apply

  1. 1Apply online via Apply for Water Rebates on the Surprise water conservation page, choose SFR Turf removal
  2. 2Submit photos of proposed area
  3. 3City pre-inspects and emails authorization to proceed
  4. 4Complete project and notify staff by June 1, 2027; allow two weeks for post-inspection
  5. 5City mails rebate check
