The Story
Plant Bio
Deutzia gracilis, slender deutzia, is a dense arching deciduous shrub from central and southern Japan, reaching two to five feet with a mounding habit rather wider than it is tall. Slender brown stems carry narrow bright green leaves, and short upright sprays of small white star-shaped flowers cover the whole shrub in late spring.
It flowers on wood made the previous year, so prune within a few weeks of the flowers fading — a late-winter tidy removes exactly the growth that would have bloomed. The display is brief but total, covering the shrub completely for a fortnight, and outside that window it is a plain green mound, so site it where later plants carry the season.
