Plant Bio

Sarcococca hookeriana, Himalayan sweet box, is a dense broadleaf evergreen shrub from China, the central and eastern Himalaya and southeastern Tibet, reaching four or five feet tall and five or six across. Narrow glossy dark green leaves cover it year round, and small white tubular flowers open in late winter, followed by shiny black fruit.

The flowers are barely visible but the scent carries right across a garden in late winter, which makes it one of the very few plants worth siting in deep shade beside a path or door. The low spreading form most people picture is var. humilis, which stays under eighteen inches — buy that variety by name, because the straight species is three times its size.
