Fuchsia x hybrida is the garden fuchsia, a large group of hybrids drawn from South American and Mexican species and grown mainly in containers and hanging baskets. Growth is upright, arching or weeping to about three feet, and the pendent tubular flowers, with flared sepals above a contrasting skirt of petals, hang along the stems from spring until frost.

It wants shade and cool, moist air, and simply stops flowering through a hot humid summer — in the South treat it as a spring and autumn plant rather than a summer one. Fuchsia gall mite is the serious threat: it twists and thickens the shoot tips into unrecognisable galls, cannot be sprayed out, and infested plants should be bagged and binned rather than pruned.
