Senecio candicans is an evergreen perennial from southern South America grown for its foliage, a mound of broad silver-white leaves twelve to twenty-four inches high and up to three feet across. The leaves are thick, softly felted and scalloped at the edges. Small yellow daisy flowers appear in summer and add little to the display.
The silver is a covering of fine hairs that reflects sun and holds moisture, which is why it takes heat and drought but rots in a wet winter. Grow it in gritty soil or a container that can be kept dry and sheltered from cold rain. Like other Senecio species it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids and should not be eaten.
