The Story

Plant Bio

Juniperus procumbens, the Japanese garden juniper, is a prostrate needled evergreen from southern Japan and Korea, growing only six to eighteen inches high but spreading ten to fifteen feet. Spiny blue-green to grey-green needles a third of an inch long clothe branches that spread horizontally just above the ground and intertwine into a dense mat.

Plan for the spread, because it is the point of the plant and it is far greater than most people expect from something knee-high. Slow growth and dense fine foliage make it one of the classic subjects for bonsai. Like all junipers it demands sharp drainage and full sun, and rots quickly in heavy or shaded ground.
