Edgeworthia chrysantha, paperbush, is a rounded deciduous shrub from China and the Himalayas, four to six feet in both directions. Smooth brown stems branch in distinct threes, giving a sculptural winter silhouette, and rounded clusters of small tubular flowers, silver-white outside and golden within, open on the bare wood in late winter.

The scent in late winter is powerful and carries a long way, which is the reason to grow it — site it near a door or path rather than at the back of a border. Its stems branch strictly in threes, so the bare winter framework is as ornamental as the flowers. The bark has been used for centuries to make high-quality Japanese paper and banknotes.
