The Story
Plant Bio
Syzygium wilsonii, commonly known as the powderpuff lillypilly, is an evergreen understorey shrub native to the rainforests of far north Queensland. It features weeping, pendulous branches clad in stiff, narrow lanceolate leaves that open in bronze-pink flushes before maturing to a dull dark green.
This species is distinguished by its large, deep crimson pom-pom flower heads composed of dense stamens that hang beneath the weeping foliage from spring to summer. Unlike many common lillypillies, it shows high resistance to psyllid leaf-galling but requires consistent moisture and shelter from hot winds to thrive.

Planting
How to Grow
- Select a planting site in dappled or partial shade, protected from strong, drying winds.
- Incorporate generous amounts of well-composted organic matter into the planting hole to enrich the soil.
- Water the plant thoroughly before and immediately after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
- Apply a thick layer of organic mulch over the root zone, keeping it clear of the direct stem, to retain moisture.
Pro Tip
Plant this species in dappled understorey shade with rich, organic-heavy soil; placing it in full sun causes leaf scorch and stalls growth.
Keep It Thriving
Care Guide
Do
- Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry summer periods.
- Apply an annual top-dressing of compost and organic mulch to enrich the root zone.
- Tip-prune lightly after flowering to maintain a dense, bushy habit.
Don't
- Do not plant in full, baking sun where the foliage will scorch.
- Do not allow the soil to dry out completely, as the plant has low drought tolerance.
- Avoid heavy pruning into old, leafless wood, which recovers slowly.
