The Story
Plant Bio
Acer tataricum, Tatarian maple, is a small deciduous tree or large shrub from western Asia and southeastern Europe, fifteen to thirty feet tall and nearly as wide. Its leaves are mostly oval and unlobed, unusual for a maple, and the paired winged samaras turn bright red in summer, giving a display more conspicuous than the flowers.
The red samaras in midsummer are the reason to grow it — a haze of scarlet across the whole crown weeks before any autumn colour arrives. It is exceptionally cold-hardy and tolerates poor soil and urban conditions. The Amur maple subspecies is invasive in parts of the Midwest and Northeast, so check which one you are buying.

Planting
How to Grow
- Check whether it is the Amur subspecies, which can be invasive.
- Plant in full sun for the best samara colour.
- Give it any reasonably drained soil.
- Allow twenty feet or more of spread.
- Prune in summer; maples bleed from spring cuts.
- Pull seedlings if it self-sows freely.
Pro Tip
The red display in July is the seeds, not flowers — and it lasts far longer than any blossom would.

Common Questions
Tatarian Maple questions
What zones can Tatarian Maple grow in?
Tatarian Maple is hardy in USDA Zones 4–10. Inside that range it survives winter in the ground; outside it, grow it as an annual or a container plant you protect.
Is Tatarian Maple deer resistant?
Yes — Tatarian Maple is rated deer-resistant. Deer typically pass it over, though extreme hunger can override any plant's defenses.
When does Tatarian Maple bloom?
Tatarian Maple typically blooms in late spring through late spring. Exact timing shifts a week or two with your zone — Sow's bloom calendar maps it to your garden.
Does Tatarian Maple need full sun?
Tatarian Maple does best in full sun to part shade. In hot climates, afternoon shade keeps blooms fresher longer.
Is Tatarian Maple drought tolerant?
Yes — once established (usually after the first full season), Tatarian Maple handles dry spells with minimal watering. Water deeply its first year to build the root system that makes that possible.
