Lamium galeobdolon, yellow archangel, is a fast creeping evergreen perennial from Europe and western Asia, making a mat of silver-marked heart-shaped leaves on square white-hairy stems, with flowering shoots rising one to two feet. Whorls of hooded yellow flowers open in late spring, and it roots freely wherever the running stems touch the ground.
It is invasive in North America and a listed noxious weed in Washington and Oregon, where it escapes gardens and carpets forest floors — every rooted fragment starts a new colony, including the ones in dumped garden waste. Choose the far better behaved spotted deadnettle, Lamium maculatum, or native wild ginger or foamflower for the same job in dry shade.
