Juncus effusus, soft rush, is a clumping evergreen perennial found in wet ground across North America, Eurasia and western South America. It has no true leaves — what looks like foliage is a dense tuft of smooth cylindrical green stems, two to three feet tall, arching slightly at the tips. Small brown-green flower clusters appear to emerge from the side of each stem in summer.
It is one of the few plants that looks deliberate in standing water, holding a strong vertical line at a pond edge where most perennials collapse. It spreads by short rhizomes into broad colonies, and the stems stay green through winter, so it keeps structure in the garden when everything around it has gone.
