Hakea victoria

The Story

Plant Bio

Hakea victoria is an erect, column-shaped evergreen shrub native to the rocky coastal heathlands of southern Western Australia. The species grows as a narrow, sparsely branched column reaching up to three metres in height, adapted to lean, highly drained sandy soils.

The stiff, stem-clasping leaves feature sharp, prickly margins and display a distinct colour gradient, transitioning from green at the base to shades of yellow, orange, and burgundy near the apex. Small cream-white flowers are produced in winter and spring, though they remain largely obscured within the concave, cup-like foliage.

Uses & Benefits:

Ornamental UsesHighly architectural growth habit with a striking colour gradient on the stiff, stem-clasping leaves.
Practical UsesExcellent windbreak and barrier plant for coastal gardens with low-nutrient, sandy soils.
Ecological BenefitsProvides nectar for honeyeaters and native bees, while the prickly foliage offers protective nesting sites for small birds.

Planting

How to Grow

  1. Select a site in full sun with exceptionally well-drained, sandy or gritty soil.
  2. Plant during late autumn or winter to allow root establishment before summer heat.
  3. Water sparingly during the first summer, then cease regular watering once established.
  4. Apply a low-phosphorus, native-formulated slow-release fertiliser only if soil is extremely depleted.

Pro Tip

Avoid pruning into old, leafless wood because this species lacks a lignotuber and cannot regenerate from bare stems.

Keep It Thriving

Care Guide

Do

  • Plant in a position with excellent air circulation and low summer humidity.
  • Ensure the soil drains rapidly to prevent root rot.
  • Use native-specific fertilisers with zero or extremely low phosphorus.

Don't

  • Do not prune hard into old wood, as the plant lacks a lignotuber and will die.
  • Do not plant in heavy clay or waterlogged soils.
  • Do not over-water once the root system is established.
