White Velvet

Tradescantia sillamontana

The Story

Plant Bio

Tradescantia sillamontana, white velvet, is a slow succulent perennial from Mexico, six to twelve inches high and spreading twelve to eighteen. Thick fleshy zigzagging stems and leaves are densely covered in white woolly hairs, and small saucer-shaped magenta flowers open at the stem tips through summer.

The white wool is a drought adaptation, reflecting light and holding humidity against the leaf, and it thins in shade — so the plant is whitest in the brightest position, which is the opposite of most variegation. It is slower and far better behaved than the trailing tradescantias, and NCSU rates it resistant to deer, drought, heat, humidity and disease.

Planting

How to Grow

  1. Grow in full sun or bright light for the whitest wool.
  2. Use gritty, sharply draining compost.
  3. Let the compost dry out between waterings.
  4. Water into the soil, not over the woolly leaves.
  5. Cut back hard in spring to renew the stems.
  6. Keep it frost-free through winter.

Pro Tip

Water into the compost rather than over the plant — wet wool mats down, loses the silver look and invites rot in the stems beneath.

Common Questions

White Velvet questions

What zones can White Velvet grow in?

White Velvet is hardy in USDA Zones 8–10. Inside that range it survives winter in the ground; outside it, grow it as an annual or a container plant you protect.

Is White Velvet deer resistant?

Not reliably. Deer may browse White Velvet, especially tender spring growth — plan on repellents or fencing where pressure is high.

When does White Velvet bloom?

White Velvet typically blooms in summer through late fall. Exact timing shifts a week or two with your zone — Sow's bloom calendar maps it to your garden.

Does White Velvet need full sun?

White Velvet does best in full sun to part shade. In hot climates, afternoon shade keeps blooms fresher longer.

Is White Velvet drought tolerant?

Yes — once established (usually after the first full season), White Velvet handles dry spells with minimal watering. Water deeply its first year to build the root system that makes that possible.
