The Story

Plant Bio

Actaea simplex, Kamchatka bugbane, is an upright clumping perennial from eastern Asia, reaching about five feet in flower. Deeply cut compound foliage sits on wiry brownish-purple stems, and in late summer and autumn slender bottlebrush spikes of small fragrant white flowers rise well above the leaves.

It flowers in autumn, later than almost any other shade perennial, and the spikes are strongly scented — worth siting near a path for that alone. The dark-leaved cultivars need morning sun to hold their colour and scorch in afternoon heat. All parts are toxic, and the berries most of all, so keep it away from small children.
