Callicarpa americana, American beautyberry, is an open arching deciduous shrub native to the central and southeastern United States, reaching three to eight feet. Small pink flowers in the leaf axils are unremarkable, but by late summer they become tight clusters of intensely magenta-purple berries that ring the stems and persist after the leaves fall.
The berry colour is genuinely unusual — a saturated metallic magenta that has no real equivalent among hardy shrubs — and it shows best once the foliage drops. Crushed leaves contain compounds with documented mosquito-repellent activity, long used as a folk remedy across the South.
