In one minute

  • One photo in, the same view back planted with real, named species checked against your zone.
  • Change any plant on the phone: remove it, recount it, swap it or drag it by hand.
  • Free to start with 10 designs. Pro is $39.99 a year on the web.

What you get

  • Sow design of the front walkway on iPhone with both borders planted and a plant list showing The Fairy Rose x8, Foxglove Sugar Plum x28, Hawera Daffodil x66 with botanical names

From photo to planted in minutes

On the phone, Auto Design takes a photo from your space, camera or library, asks for style, sunlight and must-haves, and returns up to 9 designs from one photo. Our front-yard test came back with both walkway borders planted and a list of five species with botanical names and quantities, in under three and a half minutes end to end.

  • Sow gallery card for Romantic Cottage Walkway with a plant palette of named plants, Show 2 More, Shopping List and Continue editing

Every plant is real and named

Sow draws from 12,000+ real outdoor plants, each with zone, sun, mature size, bloom and care data. Every plant in a design is a real, named species from that library, and on the web each name links to its catalog page. Tap anything in any design and see exactly what it is, what it needs, and what a nursery charges for it today.

  • Sow per-plant controls for The Fairy Rose showing Remove, Fewer, More and Swap buttons and the count of eight in this design

Edit the design, plant by plant

On mobile, every generated species can be removed, counted up or down, or swapped, and the Plant Editor lets you drag in plants, furniture, lighting and paving by hand, on a generated design or a plain photo; on the web, Design Studio places plants and objects over the render. The Edit design sheet also takes plain instructions such as "add a stone path" and restyles the same planting for golden hour, winter or night.

  • Sow Planting Plans screen with beds outlined on a satellite view of a property, 12 beds and 490 plants in one space

    Plan from above

Planting Plans finds the beds in a satellite view of your yard on its own, then fills each one with a planting plan you can tweak: area, sun, plant count, four layout styles and a chip per species with its count. Review Costs turns that into a priced plant schedule with quantities before you export the PDF.

  • Care that knows your yard

After planting, each space tracks what is in the ground, what is blooming and what needs doing. Reminders to deadhead, divide, prune and water are timed to your climate and the plants you actually own. A water budget says plainly whether to water this week. Weather-aware care uses US forecasts.

  • Sow Design Studio in Manual mode with the generated design as the canvas, Objects and Furniture categories, browse options and quick filters

One project on phone, tablet and computer

The same designs, spaces and plant library open on iPhone, Android and in a browser, so the Mac, iPad and Windows questions have one answer: open usesow.com. There is nothing to install there, and the apps are on the App Store and Google Play. The store badges are at the bottom of this page.

  • Place everything yourself

Prefer to do it by hand? Open the Editor on any photo and drag in plants, furniture, lighting, fences and water features, or paint lawn, mulch, gravel and pavers. Resize, rotate, duplicate and undo as you go.

  • A doctor, a sun meter and a grid

Plant Doctor names what is wrong with a struggling plant from one photo. The Sunlight Meter measures how much sun a spot really gets. Garden Planner lays out a grid bed with companion-planting suggestions.

What people say

Best app for landscape planning

What I like is it's not just generic suggestions. You can actually move stuff around and think through a space before you spend any money. This feels closest to real landscape planning to me.
App Store review · April 2026

All in one design & plant care app

It's literally 6+ apps in one… I do designs for clients, as well as maintain a fairly large garden myself. The designs also allow you to download a PDF packet which shows a bloom calendar and plant care guide for clients. Absolutely incredible.

A lifesaver as a first-time homeowner

I snapped a picture of a mystery plant in my yard and the Plant ID got it right instantly. I used the drag-and-drop planner to design my flower beds with real-scale layout and it honestly looks like I hired a professional landscaper.

How it works

How to design your landscape from your phone

  1. Install Sow and create a space

Get Sow from the App Store or Google Play, sign in, and add a space for the area you are designing. Each space carries its sun and zone, for example part sun, zone 8a.

  2. Open Create and choose Auto Design

Auto Design makes up to 9 designs from one photo.

  3. Set style, sunlight and must-haves

The Make it yours chips cover Style, sunlight (pre-filled from your space) and Must-haves. Pick Surprise me for all 9 styles, or one style such as Cottage.

  4. Add the photo and crop it

Take a photo, pick one from the space, or choose from your library. Single planting beds or borders work best, so crop to the bed you want planted.

  5. Open the design and check the plants

The gallery shows Creating, then the finished design with a Before and After toggle and a Plants list with botanical names and quantities. Save all adds them to your library.

  6. Edit design until it is yours

Tap a species for Remove, Fewer, More or Swap, type a change, try a new look, or open the Plant Editor and drag plants, furniture and paving by hand. Then open the same project at usesow.com if you want a bigger screen.

What can you do in the iPhone app?

Make a design from a photo with the light set from your space, then edit every species by hand.

Everything starts from the Create tab. You pick a space first, and each space carries its own sun and zone, for example "part sun, zone 8a", so every tool knows the conditions before you touch a photo. From there: Auto Design, Plant Designer, Editor, Maps, Planting Plans, Plant Doctor and the Sunlight Meter.

Auto Design is the fastest route to a result. Make it yours chips set Style, sunlight (pre-filled from the space) and Must-haves; the style sheet offers Surprise me for all 9 styles or any one of them; the photo can come from the space, the camera or your library, with a crop step that works best on single beds or borders.

A toast says your design is on its way and the gallery shows it as Creating.

Our front-yard result listed The Fairy Rose x8, Foxglove Sugar Plum x28, Hawera daffodil x66 and anemone x14, with a Before and After toggle, Save all, Edit list, Edit design and Share. Because the sunlight chip was set to part sun, the picks suited a bed under pines.

Edit design is where the phone earns its place. Tap a species chip for Remove, Fewer, More and Swap. Type a change. Try a new look for Golden Hour, Volumetric, Winter, Nighttime or Future growth. Or edit by hand in the Plant Editor, dragging plants, furniture and paving where you want them: manual control a professional can work in, and a homeowner can actually understand.

02

What can you do in the Android app?

The same things as on iPhone, with the same account and projects.

The same things. Sow ships one shared design on iPhone and Android, so the Create tab, Auto Design, the Edit design sheet, Planting Plans, care reminders and the plant library are the same on both. Sign in on an Android phone and the design you made on an iPhone is there.

The screenshots on this page come from an iPhone and a browser, where we ran our October 2026 bake-off; the Android app is the same product. Our Android roundup, linked below, covers the rest of the field.

03

What can you do on the web, on a Mac, Windows PC or iPad?

Open usesow.com for Auto Designs, Design Studio and Help Me Choose, with nothing to install.

Open usesow.com in a browser and sign in. There is nothing to install, which is why "landscape design app for Mac" and "for iPad" both resolve here. Signup is an email and a password, and in our test the dashboard opened in about 10 seconds.

Auto Designs on the web offers three directions: Classic (all 9 styles, 25 credits), Style Design (pick styles, 5 credits per design) and Goal Design (describe the outcome). Our Cottage run on the front yard came back as "Romantic Cottage Walkway" with five linked plants, 90 to 150 seconds after submitting.

Continue editing opens the design in Design Studio: the render becomes the canvas, and you place plants and objects over it from a library with Objects and Furniture and quick filters for Native, Full Sun, Shade, Deer, Drought and Pollinators. Help Me Choose asks for style, zip code, plant roles and a sunlight preference and recommends plants to match. Part of the library carries a Pro badge.

How do the phone and the web fit together?

The phone for the yard, the browser for the big screen, and one project in both.

Use the phone for anything that happens in the yard: photographing a bed, measuring how much direct sun a spot really gets with the Sunlight Meter, checking a sick leaf with Plant Doctor, ticking off care tasks. Use the browser for Design Studio with a mouse, catalog pages and the gallery.

The per-bed plant schedule with an editable unit price is a mobile feature today. Planting Plans on the phone lays out beds on a satellite view, and Review Costs lists quantity, unit price and estimated cost per species, with a total (602 plants at $8,919.70 on our test plan).

The web design Shopping List PDF gives each species a quantity, a unit price and a line total with an estimated total, the unit price being the lowest listed across the online nurseries Sow tracks (usually the smallest pot), without mature size or spacing, so if you need the bed-by-bed numbers or want to set your own prices, finish on the phone.

Questions people ask

Is there a free landscape design app?

Sow is free to start on iPhone, Android and the web: everyone gets 10 free designs to start and more for taking part (posting a design earns 25 credits, a referral 100). Every one is a design of your own yard with real, named plants you can swap.

What is the best landscape design app for iPhone?

It depends on the job. For placing objects and hardscape by hand, with AR, the long-running drag-and-drop apps are strong and our iPhone roundup covers them. For a planted design of your own yard with real species you can edit one by one, Sow is our pick.

Is there a good landscape design app for Android?

Sow runs the same shared app on Android as on iPhone: Auto Design, Edit design, Planting Plans, care and the plant library, with the same account and projects. Our bake-off screenshots come from an iPhone and a browser.

Is there a landscape design app for iPad or Mac?

Sow has no separate iPad or Mac app and does not need one: usesow.com runs in a browser on an iPad, a Mac or a Windows PC with nothing to install, giving you Auto Designs, the gallery, Design Studio, Help Me Choose and the catalog pages. Planting Plans with the priced schedule is on the phone app.

Can I design my backyard using an app?

Yes. Our fenced backyard photo came back as "Romantic Cottage Haven" with five named plants in a continuous bed along the fence, fence and trees kept. The patchy lawn was left exactly as photographed, so if you want a lawn replaced, say so or crop to the bed you want planted.

How much does a landscape design app cost?

For Sow: free to start; Pro from $39.99 a year on the web ($59.99 a year through the App Store); Pro+ $99.99 a year. Web Pro has a 7-day trial or $9.99 a month; Pro+ has a 3-day trial or $29.99 a month. Our roundups list what the rest of the category charges, with the date we checked.

Can I take a photo of my yard and get a design back?

That is exactly the flow. On the phone, Auto Design takes a photo from your space, camera or library, asks for style and sunlight, and returns the same view planted with named species and quantities. Our front-yard test came back in under three and a half minutes end to end with both borders planted.

Does the app work in the UK?

Zone matching covers the US, Canada, the UK and Australia, so a UK garden gets zone-checked plants, the plant library and all of the design tools. Weather-aware care uses US forecasts, so outside the US you will not get forecast-driven watering and frost alerts.
