The Story

Plant Bio

A robust, fast-growing, suckering perennial from the Himalayan forests. It forms a pseudostem (false trunk) with large, paddle-shaped, green leaves that can be up to 6 feet long. The undersides of new leaves may have a reddish-purple flush. It produces ornamental, but seedy and inedible, fruits. One of the hardiest ornamental bananas, capable of surviving winters in USDA Zone 7b (or even 6 with heavy protection). Its large, tropical leaves create a dramatic architectural effect in temperate gardens. The fruits are small, seedy, and not considered palatable.

Sikkim Banana is hardy in USDA Zones 7โ€“10. Inside that range it survives winter in the ground; outside it, grow it as an annual or a container plant you protect.

Is Sikkim Banana deer resistant?

Yes โ€” Sikkim Banana is rated deer-resistant. Deer typically pass it over, though extreme hunger can override any plant's defenses.

When does Sikkim Banana bloom?

Sikkim Banana typically blooms in early summer through mid-summer. Exact timing shifts a week or two with your zone โ€” Sow's bloom calendar maps it to your garden.

Does Sikkim Banana need full sun?
