The Story
Plant Bio
Vicia faba, fava bean, is an erect annual crop from the Middle East, reaching about three feet on stout hollow square unbranched stems. Each stem carries two to six leaflets four inches long with conspicuous stipules, and lipped white flowers blotched black open in spring and early summer before the pods fill.
It is the only bean that grows in cold weather, sown in autumn or very early spring and cropping before the summer beans have germinated. It fixes nitrogen, so the roots are worth digging in rather than pulling. The beans cause favism, a serious haemolytic reaction, in people with G6PD deficiency — a genuine hazard, not a sensitivity.
