Liquidambar styraciflua, sweetgum, is a large deciduous tree native to the eastern United States and Mexico, reaching sixty to a hundred feet with a strongly pyramidal crown when young. Its star-shaped five-lobed leaves are glossy dark green through summer and turn a mix of yellow, orange, crimson and purple in autumn, often all on one tree.
Autumn colour is among the most reliable of any American tree, and corky wings develop along the younger branches, giving winter character. The spiked seed balls it drops are the reason it is often regretted near paths and lawns; fruitless selections exist and are worth seeking if that matters to you.
