Loropetalum chinense, Chinese fringe flower, is an arching broadleaf evergreen shrub native from China to northeast Thailand, Japan and Taiwan, reaching six to eight feet. Clusters of narrow ribbon-like petals in white or hot pink open along the branches in spring, and the purple-leaved forms hold burgundy foliage through the year.

The flowers really are fringes — four strap-shaped petals per bloom, unlike anything else commonly planted — and mature plants often reflower lightly through the season. Its widely underestimated size is the usual problem: purple-leaved forms sold as compact foundation shrubs regularly reach eight feet and get sheared into stumps to control them.
