Local add-ons

These pay on top of a regional rebate, so their own rate understates what a resident receives. They aren't ranked against programs that publish a full rate.

The highest caps

The most one household can receive, from programs that list themselves as open. A high cap matters for large lawns; most homes reach a lower cap first.

Before you take out any grass

  • Apply first. Most programs want an approved application, and often a pre-inspection, before any grass comes out.
  • Check the cap and the area limits. A high rate with a low cap can pay less than a lower rate with no cap.
  • Expect to show a plan. 52% of the programs ranked here ask for a plan, sketch or plant list before they approve a project.
  • Look for a local add-on. Some utilities pay their own amount on top of a regional rebate, and a few add bonuses for native plants, trees or drip irrigation.
  • Leave artificial turf out of the plan. Most programs won’t pay for it.

How this ranking works

  • We started from the 132 US lawn replacement programs in Sow's yard rebate directory. 2 have ended. 5 couldn't be confirmed on an official page and are left out until they are re-checked.
  • 32 confirmed programs pay a flat amount, a share of the cost or a service instead of a rate per square foot of lawn. They're on the lawn replacement page but not in this ranking.
  • Each rate is the one on the program's official page when we last checked it. Where a program pays more for the first part of a lawn and less after, the table shows both and ranks by the first rate.
  • Some utilities publish a combined rate that already includes a regional rebate. Others publish only their own add-on, paid on top of it. Combined rates are ranked as published, and add-ons are listed separately.
  • Caps are the most one household can receive, as published. A program with no published cap may still limit its budget or the area it pays for.
  • Rates and budgets change, often on July 1, and the ranking updates when programs are re-checked. How we research yard rebates

Lawn rebate questions

Which lawn replacement rebate pays the most?

The highest published rate is $5 per square foot, offered to customers of LADWP, EMWD, SCV Water, SNWA and West Basin. Some of those rates already include a regional rebate, and several programs cap what one household can receive, so check the cap and the rules on each program page.

How much do lawn replacement rebates usually pay?

The median published rate is $2 per square foot across the 90 programs ranked here, and 30 of them pay $3 or more. Most also set a maximum per household.

Do I need approval before I remove my lawn?

Almost always. Most programs require an approved application, and often a pre-inspection, before any grass comes out. Removing it first is the most common reason a rebate is denied.

Can I use this data?

Yes. Quote it, chart it or republish it with credit and a link to this page. The full table is a free CSV download.

Sow is not affiliated with any of these agencies or utilities. Amounts and rules change, often at the start of a fiscal year, so confirm the details on the official page before you start a project. How we research these programs

Plan the garden that replaces the lawn

52% of these programs ask for a plan or plant list. Sow lays out the new planting on a photo of your yard, with plants suited to where you live, and keeps the plant list ready for the application.
